While I absolutely love the ease of using Blogger, I am shifting my entire photographic focus from "Photography by Jessica Noelle" to "Portraiture With A Purpose."

Portraiture with a Purpose is intended to help people and the community get "more bang for the buck." As Portraiture With a Purpose, I enable people to invest in heirloom photography while donating a portion of every session, order &/or event to the charity of their choosing. Together, we can invest in memories of today and the dreams of tomorrow.

There is a bit of "construction" still happening on the new Blog Site, but new information and highlights are being added regularly.

How To Get the MOST of Your Photography Sitting

No matter if you are a High School Senior, an Expecting Parent, a Corporate Executive or the Grandchild of 16, there are a few simple things you can do to ensure your photography sitting not only yields awesome photos, but is FUN!

(1) RELAX & LET'S TALK/PLAY:   You are amazing, your child is amazing, your family is awesome- even if a zit popped up on the tip of your nose this morning, the baby is crying when you arrive or you spilled coffee on your lap on the way over. (Not a big deal in this age of technology and Photoshop.) Our goal is to see YOU, the subject, in a photo. A good photographer can get around just about anything you can throw at them. When you simply "show up" as the relaxed version of yourself, we get to see the light that is you shinning brightly.

(2) LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS: Ok, not literally. What I mean by this is that you need to let go of there being a "perfect" photo or a "perfect" sitting for a 14 month old. The "perfect" photo will happen without you trying to be perfect or scolding your child to smile. Sometimes it's the sweet closed eyes or an infectious laugh which leap out of the photo and grab our hearts, let those moments be the perfect moment they are.

Seriously, I wish it had occurred to me to have a hidden camera in the studio to video tape parents during their child's session. Parents would be appalled to see themselves sometimes.

(3) BRING A JUST IN CASE BAG: If it's just you, bring a change out-fit just in case you aren't "feeling it" in what you showed up in and a water or snack. Sometimes just knowing you have options you like puts you at ease.

If you are bringing children I suggest:
   - FOOD & TREATS: to both ensure they aren't hungry and as bribing tools if necessary.
   - EXTRA CLOTHES: kids are messy & a clothes changing opportunity often yields adorable images.
   - FAVORITE TOY or DOLL: a good photographer will have the toy or doll help take the photos and keep even the least cooperative kid entertained for a minute or two- Long enough to capture at least ONE spark of joy.

The key is to just be yourself and think of your mini-session as your opportunity to SHINE. Tell the kids it's their time to be a star or simply play with "Miss Jess" or whomever your photographer is. If you are enjoying yourself and allowing the children to enjoy themselves, you will be floored by the phenomenal images that result

Family Sports Day

Kids are funny. It does not matter if it's raining, cold, yucky or otherwise not pleasant outside. If you've been away from the kiddos for one or more days at a time, all they want to do is play with you.

These are the moments worthy of your walls, with everyone in them.

This is my family, but I would love you to think about setting aside an hour to simply play with your children.
Take a walk and see all the 'cool' things they see.
HINT to DADs: Mom's LOVE it when you think to organize a play date with the family.
We moms especially LOVE if you also hire a photographer to stealthily capture this awesome family time & present us with amazing family photos as a gift. (Mother's day is right around the corner really.)

I love to photograph children just being children.

I really love photographing children as they teach us to remember to find the joy in things like your basement flooding. Today I accomplished almost nothing I wanted to do and everything I needed to do. Enjoy this little snip-it of our day.

It's Time to Reserve Your Iris Garden Photos

I am certain that if you live remotely near the Presby Iris Gardens in Montclair, NJ you may think I am a bit insane in starting the reservations now, but I have found that if we wait until the Crocus has broken through the snow most people have to scramble to make their session be what they want it to be. This year, we are planning ahead and marking our calendars in pencil.

I will be shooting just 16 Iris Mini-Sessions this year. Each mini-session is a steal at just $95. Sessions are 30 minutes and include an 8x10, three rights released jpegs and the option to purchase eco-conscious prints at the "friends & family" rate.

This year we are offering the GP Albums "The Green Album" at a low introductory rate as well.

Remembering It's the Little Things

Sometimes (ok often) I get so caught up in trying to figure out how I can best serve and trying to figure out where the path is leading me, that I completely forget to just "Be Here Now" .

Today, as Cadence was taking the time to sit on the Potty and just be her little self... It occured to me that THIS is special. This is a special moment between a Girl and her Mommy talking and playing while she learns to use the potty. So I reached up, swept her growing out bangs off her face and asked her if I could take her picture. No sooner did she get "sure Mommy" across those precious lips was I literally RUNNING down the two sets of stairs to get my good camera from the car. I seriously made it back to the bathroom in less than a minute...

And then, a moment in the bathroom turned into a full photo shoot for Cadie and her animals (This girl LOVES to stage!) Here is the rest of our shoot through the end:

And then, Rene of MakeItRain , Inc came to ME to discuss how we could work together in an Agent/Talent kind of way- It was AWESOME!!! The "show" Cadie put on for us in my kitchen was even better. Next time, VIDEO!!!

Stewardship, Guess How Much?!?!?!?!

I believe strongly that we are each to be responsible for all the amazing assets and skills we are blessed with. I believe that as a business woman it is my responsibility to charge my clients a fair and reasonable rate at all times, to never require more for my services than is needed to cover my actual expenses. I also believe that every cent you and I spend needs to garner the most it possibly can for the investment.

I believe my favorite "game" on the planet is one many of my married friends "play" with their significant others when we walk in the door with some fantastic item that makes us smile from ear to ear. I believe the item itself can be what is bringing us so much pride and joy, but even more so, for many of us, is the AMAZING DEAL we got on this little peace of Heaven!!!

I call this game, "Guess how much?!?!?!?!?!"    The more significant the savings for this quality product, the more points the finder earns. The higher the point tally, the better we are at being good stewards.

My over-arching Goal in life is to serve as many people as I possibly can through my photography. I was inspired to officially declare myself a Concierge Photographer as we rang in 2010, a concept which is becoming increasingly defined as the year moves forward.

I realized two weeks ago, while sitting in sacrament meeting, right in the middle of church, that not only do I need to be a Concierge Photographer but I need you to be involved in helping me serve.

This week, during the portions of the night that I have been sleeplessly laying in bed from the flu, a fantastic lecture on Manifest-ing by Gabrielle Bernstein came to me in my email.

Last Night, I stayed up significantly too late to take advantage of my printer's amazing free product offerings. I was blessed to be able to create phase one of Portraits for A Cause last night, Senior Portraits. (Thank you Luc & Victoria!!)

This morning I purchased the related domains for Portraits for a Cause to officially exist on the internet. In the coming days I will be creating the physical materials & web-site content for all the Portraits for a Cause Programs. I will not decide which cause you choose to support with your portraits, but it is my hope that Portraits for a Cause will be the parent of the Non-Profit I intend to build during 2010 and launch in 2011.

In 2011 I plan to launch "Six Weeks Home." Six Weeks Home will be a program where-by mothers who could not otherwise afford for both parents to take at least three weeks off, six weeks off for mom, following the birth of their child to have the means to do so. My daughter's dad was home with me for 21 days and I had my mother to help me for just over a week, that bonding time was invaluable. It is my goal to help give the means for time home to as many families as possible.

I currently have a few people who have asked if they may share the word of my work and goal with their friends and clients, if you too would like to carry Portraits for a Cause business cards, place a flier or two up in places you go, have a portrait fund-raiser for your group or would like to link to our future web-site... we would LOVE to hear from you!!!

Next Month, when all products are organized, web-site is live, daily schedule is created & has been analyzed, I will be visiting local churches, businesses, country clubs & press-releasing our launch. If you are potentially interested in creating an event for something you are involved in, let me know!

It's Cool to Brag about Your Spouse

Normally I would be blogging to remind you that Valentine's Day is less than three weeks away, that we have a pin-up/boudoir session this Sunday (Jan 31st) in Rhode Island if you want to sign up and do photos of you for yourself or your love and that if you'd simply like to do some cool, fun photos of you, I am at your beckon call. A Life Well Lived, A Testament of Hope

The Essential Writting and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. have influenced my life almost as significantly as the Bible. I stumbled upon the collection at a Thrift Store in my teen years, it took me almost five years to read them all. I let each speech speech, sermon or writting stand on it's own two feet and sink in. In my opinion, "I had a dream" was actually one of the lesser poignant speeches Dr.King made. If you aren't familiar with the vast field of works by this great mean, I highly suggest you pick up A Testament of Hope. It is worth EVERY cent & hour you invest.

I am so in awe of how significantly this great thinker changed the scope of so many people's focus that I had these grandios plans to schedule a service project my daughter & I could get all her neighborhood friends involved in to honor the spirit of the late Martin Luther King, Jr.. Alas, in my head this morning I am hearing "the road to He*L is paved in good intentions and non-action." So, instead of feeling bad, I am just moving the day to next week for my daughter & I. (She's still young enough, she'll never know & the lesson won't be lost)

Down the Shore

I admit that even after five years living in New Jersey, I still do not understand why the locals say they are going "down the shore." However, this past weekend I did indeed go "down the shore" to Sea Bright. It was interesting to see the rock sea-wall separating the beach from the business & houses with the strategically built stairs over it to get to the beach (wouldn't you know I forgot to take a photo!!!)

Lindsay, Jeff and I took complete advantage of our 54 degree January "heat-wave"!!

Your New Image- Profile Photos on Your Lunch Hour

This past year I have learned a lot about who I am, who I want to be & how I want to live my life. Who I am & what I do are so intimately entwined that it does not make sense to live a life where my work gets less than being entwined in my entire world. This year it is my goal to serve & connect with you on a level that makes scheduling your photos feel like calling a friend to schedule a play-date or like calling the maid to schedule her to come over the morning after your Holiday party.

I am an in-home, on-location photographer who is capable of creating amazing portraiture under some of the most dire circumstances and/or surroundings with terrible lighting. However, if your friend from work told you that her daughter was a photographer & you should call her, you would probably think I am a "mom with a camera" who is trying to make it. Granted, I am a mom with a camera, but I am also so much more.

This year, I will change your perception & you will tell your friends that you know an amazing "Concierge Photographer" who makes events and portraits so enjoyable that you can't believe you ever went to the mall or a department store or paid $3,000K + for a wedding photographer you did not really like.

The Golden Five

We photographers LOVE our studios. We love them because we know the lighting conditions, we have control over what props we have on hand and once we get our settings set we can just kind of "coast"along.

However, bringing children or your entire family to the studio almost instantly guarantees you are going to get "a photo of (insert name here)" instead of "(inserted name) in a photo." That symantic difference is HUGE.

Let me explain. This is my daughter:

This is in our living room.

I believe the only people who hate being photographed more than photographers are photographer's children. Today, she did NOT want to "play on the stage."

In a studio this can often lead to a session with a parent sternly saying, or even yelling, "Smile for Mommy's Photo!!!" (you laugh- but it happens... a LOT)

But, when a child, children or your entire family is at home.... it is MUCH easier to distract them/you and start "playing" instead of photographing.

... even when the kids are "throwing" the props and saying, "but I don't WANT to have my picture taken." Well, ok then... can you stack those blocks you just threw or are you seeing this carrot growing out of my ear???

Hahahaha.... that's so silly!!! You do NOT have a Carrot growing out of your ear!!!

And thus the fun/real photography begins.... it's about 3- 5 minutes of laughing, talking and "can you do????" Those are the golden five.

The golden five yield the fun, dramatic, heart-string pulling, high end portraits you are always jealous that someone else got with their child/children. Today, this was one of my daughters golden five shots.

It's worth the investment & the peace of mind to bring me to you, instead of hauling yourself and the children to a major department store or chain where you have to brave the elements, then wait in line for your session & wait again to see your photos- often settling for something that can "work." You walk out having spent a solid $115, on average, and are not guaranteed you'll like your photos. In home sessions begin at just $125 and we always get something you love.

Grooms are awesome, although they rarely get to really shine on their wedding days. I am here to make it completely acceptable for the men to take 10 minutes to play, pose, posture and otherwise let loose and grab on to joy of this being their wedding day.

I caught this former Dodger enjoying a little Peace before festivities really took off.

Your brother (or sister- but we're not talking about them) is the only person who will know you your whole life. Share it with them.

So, really, when I say, "hey... can I borrow you for 10?" Keep that smirk.

Soon... you'll be grinning from ear to ear.

Next thing you know, it's official. You are who she's committed herself to.

No worries though, the guys have got your back in case you need to escape girls night or chick flicks or any other manner of torture we girls can "inflict" on you.

Before you know it, the day will be over and it'll just be you... so don't miss it ;-)

I have learned that while cool technology and things with flashing lights are fun to play with when you get them, they do eventually loose their luster and often break. However, the one thing we can give each other that is perpetually cherished is ourselves. I am consistently amazed by women who really do juggle it all. I have one Angel to look after, I work from home & I don't have a church position. I have NO idea how women have more children than I do, work or volunteer outside of the home, serve in church AND maintain a happy relationship with both their spouse and their children! Hats off to YOU, Phenomenal Woman!!!

When I met this phenomenal woman, we were girls.... learning how to tie those ends together to make them meet. I have a great mom, but her mom taught me more than I can list and I didn't even live in their house! Hats off to both K & H!!!!

I had a phenomenal time reconnecting and photographing this amazing family!!! ( I look forward to reconnecting with the rest of you Andersons in my travels!!! )

The Flu!!!

It's never a good time to get the flu, but during Holiday Family Photo time it is an especially terrible time. This year the doctor told us 5 days on the medicine and then five days without a fever without taking any medication, then we are allowed back out of the house. WOAH!!! Ten days at the least?! Yikes!!! So, December 9th- ish we will be creating family photos every second we get!!!

I detest having my photo taken. I especially detest having my photo taken by someone I don't know. Sometimes three and a half year old children are absolutely not willing to have some stranger stick a camera in their face within 2.3 minutes of saying hello.

I get it.

Sometimes it's best to just go get the telephoto lens and, in theory, walk away from the session. Walking away to give someone space can create some beautiful moments in the long run. Here is how it worked last weekend.

Last weekend I flew to Colorado to photograph Dave & Ingrid's wedding. Everyone had been so busy that we had hardly had time to communicate the plans for the weekend. All I knew was that I was at their photographic disposal as far as wedding events went.

I assumed the night before the wedding would be the rehearsal, instead it was the small intimate blessing ceremony for Liesl & Shawn. It was romantic & absolutely LOVELY!!!

My senior pictures were terrible. Seriously. I had my senior photos shot twice, I cried both times I saw the proofs. I did find two photos I could live with being bound in print for all of posterity to see, if they so chose. I pray I am NOT remembered by my senior photo.

Poor Ms. V's initial senior portrait session, with someone else, left her feeling like I did all those years ago. However, even without editing, she was smiling as she browsed the back of my camera.

You are amazing and beautiful/handsome.... and I'll show you. Here are V's sneaks.

It's not often a photographer's connection is to the groom and the first time the bride actually speaks with you is at the rehearsal, but that was the case last weekend, for me.

A friend of high school flew me out to Colorado to ensure his wedding weekend was captured well. In the process, I bonded with their entire family.

The Bride's Father is actually a Pastor himself & made the statement of this entry's title.
I learned that in their family's opinion, my energy draws people in & kept the often mundane moments from being anything but because my energy keeps everyone happy. He explained to me that he thoroughly appreciated my joy and presence in their family's festivities (and there were many.) Additionally, he told me that he wished there was someone like me near his congregation in Washington state. hehe- I reminded him I travel ;-)

This is the first question I ask professionals I am meeting as a client... getting the question as a professional makes me cringe. I love what I do- I don't do it for the money (although that is nice). I simply love photography & want to shoot.

Here are the new blanket answers to what my rates are:
$125/hour with one photographer in a non-studio setting within 30 miles of zips 07470 or 02806
$175/hour with one photographer in a non-studio setting within 30-60 miles of zips 07470 or 02806
$275/hour with one photographer in a non-studio setting in all locations between 60 miles and 4 hour drive
$500 air/hotel/car-rental for all other locations, exclusive to this package is the complete CD of images.

$125/hour for a studio session @ our location.
$200/hour to bring the studio to you.
Weddings have one standard rate & package located below.
$200/hour for two photographers in a non-studio setting- birthday parties, etc..

The follow-up answers are:
You get your photos online for one month for friends/family.
1- 8x10, 2- 5x7, 9 wallets
A DVD or DVD set of your images sized for printing with our unobtrusive logo in the bottom corner of the photographs.
And a digital print release on the DVD so you can print or use the images how you want.

Other answers:
Yes, we will do albums. Yes you may order parent books/albums as well.
We create a green wedding album or you may choose GraphiStudios.
Yes, we will help you order large canvas prints

Anywhere can look beautiful

I have found that clients often spend hours racking their brain to find "the perfect" spot to take photos. I would like people to know that ANYWHERE is "the perfect spot" to take photos, even my weather-worn UGLY driveway.

This is my daughter playing in her little pool. It is usually the type of photo any parent would take. It's fine, just unremarkable & the back-ground is UGLY. You wouldn't say "YES! Let's take our photos there!"

The "perfect" back-ground, in all honesty, will be significantly out of focus, simply providing color or texture.

This photo is significantly better, and you still get the idea that this little girl is playing in her pool. However, it would be a GREAT photo if the pool was closer to the grass so you didn't see the driveway, but it's completely acceptable.

If this were a wedding shoot we could make this area work by putting down a small cloth and having you cuddle somewhat in-front of the plants behind her in this photo. It's amazing what you make from nothing, so no need to stress... it WILL be BEAUTIFUL!!

We can create anything by walking down the block.

You CAN make your Cocktail Hour

I don't know exactly how it happened, but over time Bride & Grooms have been convinced that wedding photos take a LONG time. Perhaps that's true when your siblings, cousins, aunts & uncles are MIA when we need them... but if we co-ordinate, even remotely have our act together, there is NO REASON we can't get both amazing Editorial Photojournalism & the "posed shots" for the parents/grand-parents. Here are a few tips on how you can ensure you make your cocktail hour:

Trust your photographer. Remember, you like their work & style. If they ask you to walk around that tree holding hands...... have fun!!!

Be Prepared to spend 15 mintues taking photos with your girlz/guyz & your family 30 minutes before your transportation arrives (if you only have one photographer) or 15 minutes before your transportation arrives (if their is another photographer covering your soon-to-be-spouses' side) taking your photos with your girlz/guyz & your side of the family.

LISTEN & if your photographer says FREEZE, then freeze. This is a "Freeze" photo.

Have your photographer leave before you to head to the ceremony with the directives of photographing / distracting the Groom in the last few minutes before you arrive.

Ditch the receiving line. If you walk out the church and either get in your car to go somewhere or walk around back, have your family follow & take all the "formal" photos right there as the Church empties... you are ahead of the game! You WILL get fed first @ your reception so plan on eating.... then visiting while everyone else is still waiting for their food/eating. If your photographer is good, they'll casually follow you around & can get shots with you at the tables too.

If you don't have specific place you really WANT to do photos, ask your photographer to lead the way to the reception site & STOP in a spot they can make look cool. (It helps if you tell them what you want your photos to look like... park, cool industrial, fun trendy cafe type photo, etc.. ) if you hop out fast... you could stop twice & still make the last 30 minutes of your cocktail hour.

Why not have a little fun & still enjoy everything you've paid for???? Trust me, I've done this once or twice ;-)

The most recently designed Cache album is in. This particular album is going to it's proud couple today. My "real" cameras are out for annual cleaning, please forgive the low quality of these... I didn't want you to miss them.

Upon completion & order of your album, you will receive an all rights released DVD of your final images with a tiny watermark in the bottom corner of the images. The watermark in never intrusive on an image, I will move it to the appropriate corner to ensure image quality is preserved. If you are opposed to the watermark, you may purchase a DVD of non-watermarked images for $500.

My official studio is not quite ready (no heat yet), but I am going to set up the "studio" in my living room & give you the opportunity to come have photos taken for whatever purpose from business to fun, silly, or posed Valentine's Day photos.

Fundraiser will be from 9:30- Noon. Each appointment 30 minutes, if you need longer you may pay for another session. You will get to proof your images on-line, here on facebook or a private picassa album. Minimum donation amounts are as follows:

Level 1: Session + 1- 8x10 $25
Level 2: Session + 1 - 8x10, 2- 5x7's $35

Getting Back on Track

Ok! So in the week I've been gone I've been in a car accident, discovered our cat had been bit & needed emergency surgery, started a barter project with a very talented local glass-paining artist , started a facebook page for the business & put my daughter in part-time day-care so I can focus more on my clients without her climbing all over me. It's been a lot of change in a short amount of time... feels a lot like wedding planning!

A couple photos of my car-accident!

I was turning right in the parking lot to go down the isle to park & she came from heaven only knows where to hit me there, which then pushed me all the way into the parked cars on the right... which then did the following damage, down the entire length of the passenger side. I am sooo thankful my daughter's car-seat was latched in TIGHT!

The Most Relaxed Couple Ever!

The first time I spoke to this bride, was when I walked into her Bridal Suite on her wedding day.

On occasion I shoot for companies other than myself. Often, when I am shooting for someone else, the extent of my contact with the couple is a phone call or two before their wedding day. I used to freak out with the process, but now I kind of like it. It leaves me open to really capture personalities without any sort of personal filter.

I have no personal agendas set for any one's wedding. I know what will make this flow & will make suggestions when we speak on the phone, but the true reality is that it is your/their wedding day. On a couple's wedding day I am going to photograph the moments of joy I catch through my lens & every single thing the couple comes up with... it's their time & money.

I hope everyone had a safe & happy ringing in of 2009!

The 4th of July is by far my favorite Holiday, but I really love the week between Christmas & the new year. In general, I LOVE the winter. I love balancing time between my friends, family & clients. This year, in my favorite week, I got to catch up with a lifetime friend in New York City.

It amazes me how little I actually enjoy the city for being the city... I'm usually wrapped up in working too much to just enjoy it. However, in the winter, I relish in my time spent in the midst of all the Holiday Chaos! I even handed my camera to a total stranger & had them take photos of my friend V (yes I really call her that), me & my daughter.

I hope your holiday season brought you as much joy as mine brought me.

Kids Next Door

The holidays were full of hustle & bustle. Rushing to get family photos captured for everyone while the "children" where home for the holidays keeps me so busy, I sometimes can't see straight. However, this year I got to photograph the "kids" down the street from my parents. We had such a blast just working our way down our street to the neighborhood beach. This is what our casual, 20 minute, shoot yielded.

Sometimes I ditch my "professional" camera and roam with my hand-held Canon A630
I used to worry what my clients would think or if I was going to appear unprofessional if I showed up with my little camera, but times have CHANGED. I realized that I'm the professional & my camera the tool... would you mind which camera I used if these were the photos from your family's photo session?

If the thought of taking your triplets for photos is making you queezy, you should know that the above image was taken in less than 20 minutes & is actually derived from three different photos.

You could call this entry: Why I'm worth your time & my session fee.

I used to run an actual "studio" where people came to get their photos taken- couples, children, families. I no longer run a studio- although I have one to use if necessary.
I no longer aim to get "the perfect" shot of a group- instead, I am for the perfect experience.

I am significantly less stressed-out about sessions & my clients are thrilled to know that no matter how crazy the session seemed to them- they are going to have an amazing image within a week... Here is a perfect example: the following three images made the final print above.

If you want an amazing, natural setting, family photo that will stir your memories, bring smiles when you remember your photographic experience do the following:

(1) Pick a location where you can play with your kids-- really play with them. Swing them, slide down the slide, be silly & play.

(2) Ask your photographer to get there 10- 15 minutes before you & tell your kids that you want to play with them before you go take pictures.

(3) DO NOT tell your kids the photographer is at the location already.

(4) When you get to your location, walk with the kids or let them run ahead while you hold your husband/wife's hand, if you have one child do "1-2-3 swing" on your way to the park. Create loving displays for the photographer to capture... but don't pose, just remember to show some public affection.

(5) If playing on the swings- be on swings next to each other, etc...

(6) Play until the photographer "arrives" and says hello and asks the kids if they are ready to take a few family photos and get back to playing. (The children will usually say yes because the know they get to play again in a few minutes.)

(7) Go take a few "posed" shots...

You will get an amazing balance of photos in about 30 minutes. I can guarantee your kids will start liking family photo time through the years.
